HIPAA violation cases

Despite the best intentions of both lawmakers and healthcare providers alike, HIPAA Violation Cases occur.

In June 2014, a company by the name of Parkview Health Service violated HIPAA regulations when their employees left boxes of patient medical records on the driveway near the place of business while the office transitioned to a new location. The driveway was very close to a road which could have led to the records being compromised.

As a result, the Office for Civil Rights investigated the allegations brought against the company by its own employee. After it was confirmed that violations did occur, Parkview decided to settle out of court and pay a fine. The company was also brought under a corrective action plan to ensure the violations would not occur again in the future.

  • Whenever an individual or entity fails to comply with HIPAA, violation cases have occurred.
  • Parkview Health Service violated HIPAA in June 2014 by leaving medical records on a driveway near the public road.
  • OCR investigated the case after the HIPAA violation was reported by a physician. Parkview settled out of court, paid a fine, and adopted a corrective action plan.
