MapInfo was one of the first desktop GIS products. It was released in 1986 as Mapping Display and Analysis System (MIDAS) under the MS-DOS operating system. At present it is one of successful GIS software products available. MapInfo provides map creation and editing facilities, along with Geo-marketing opportunities. It is highly efficient in all types of spatial analysis along with a special feature of crime analysis. MapInfo has the capacity of working in a cross platform environment with CAD, ArcMap, and IMAGINE. It has numerous features including Thematic mapping, 3D, map rotation, and Geographic Searches, which are used by professionals and academics of different sectors.
